Simple Tips on How to Optimize a page
« on: September 27, 2007, 02:47:59 PM »
Let me know what you think, this is just a simple checklist but it has helped some friends go up in the ranks quite a bit.

Choose one keyword phrase for each page & make sure it is relevant to that page and the sites overall theme.

Then use this same keyword phrase throughout the page, in the following areas:

1) Once in the <Title> (5 to 7 words with the PHRASE FIRST)
2) Once in Description Tag
3) Once in a <H1> or <H2> VERY HIGH ON THE PAGE  (right after body tag is best)
4) Once as the FIRST WORD in a Paragraph near the top of the page
5) Once in Bold
6) Once in Italic
7) Once in a Link, exactly like this: <a href="keyword-phrase.html">Keyword Phrase[/url]
   VERY LOW ON THE PAGE
Note: Make sure you put the exact keyword phrase in the destination file name, as shown above.

DENSITY: 5% to 10%  (at least 300 words of text per page, but not more than 600)

IMPORTANT: Don't repeat the same phrase more than 9 times per page.

For the top of the page, FOLLOW THIS TEMPLATE EXACTLY:

<html><head><meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
<TITLE>KEYWORD PHRASE - Two words</TITLE>
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Two words - KEYWORD PHRASE eight words go right here.">
</head>

Make all javascript and CSS external, and use the minimum html code possible, try to have have more text than code.

I think the following are the most important on-page SEO factors.

Title Tag

Title tag should be below 60 characters. Title tag should contain our main keywords. First keyword should be our main keyword.

H1 and H2 tags
Our main keywords should have H1 or H2 tags.

Keywords in contents

3-5% of keyword density should be maintained. Its better if our main keywords appear on first few paragraphs.

Bold or Italic keywords.

There are three more new things:

1). Add alt tags to each image:
All images in the site should have alt tags. This is designed for when you do not see the image. Search engines like this and never put the same phrase for each image.

2). Get Linked:
A good advice that I can give is to get popular sites to link to you with no line back.

3). Make sure the content is of good quality:
Good content is what search engines are looking for. Therefore good content is necessary to take a good rank in search engines.

    * Content is the best optimization. Any type of optimization is effective only in combination with high quality and unique content. Ideally, the text contains keywords that highlights the overall theme of the post.  The content should be understandable and readable. Use your keywords wisely. Text should be written primarily for visitors, not for search engines.
    * Exchange backlinks with other relevant websites relating to your topics and with high authority websites (websites with high page ranking). Also link between pages within your website, but do this with caution and only if it’s relevant.  Don’t link every page to each other.
    * Think of a good name for your image files. Google also draws images in the calculation of the ranking. Google displays both text and images on it’s search results page, drawing on relevant images contained in the post itself, which are linked to the corresponding page. Implement keywords of a specific subject in your file name, instead of DSC93948.jpg use Tennis-Andre-Agassi-New-York.jpg if you have a picture of Andre Agassi in New York for example. Don’t forget to use the alt tag and title tag for your images, which also provide better usability and optimization for your search ranking.
    * Use short permalinks, including keywords. Use an understandable permalink.  Instead of http://yourwebsite.com/page-id?495/ use http://yourwebsite.com/andre-agassi-new-york/. Please note that only the first four words in a permalink are relevant.  Google doesn’t care about any succeeding words in your permalinks.
    * Use search engine optimized themes. Some themes use a lot code to create the layout and design. Google will wade through the source code to find the relevant content. The more code you have, the less content and keyword density. Fast performing themes are good for your Google ranking, since the performance of a website is one of two hundred criteria that determine your ranking.
    * Create a sitemap in XML format. With WordPress and plugins like Google XML Sitemaps it is a very easy task.  Google has a variety of other useful tools, too, such as Website Optimizer and Webmaster Central.
    * Highlight informative content or keywords on your website. Use h1-h6 to highlight headings or subtitles of an article or important sentences. Use the strong tag, too. But please don’t overdo it!
    * Add your posts to social networks. But please don’t only promote yourself.  Promote other posts and websites you like.  People will honor your kindness and link back to you.
    * Don’t use black hat techniques or mirror html sites. If you try to trick Google, they will find out.  Promise.  Recently, some pretty high-profile portfolio sites were recently punished by Google for such practices.  Being sneaky will do more harm than good.
    * Don’t use flash. Flash is virtually invisible to search engines.  Use WordPress.  Period.

10 Tips to Optimize Your Donation Landing Pages

   1. Use large donate buttons. Larger donate buttons convert more donors than smaller buttons.

   2. Use color. Colorful, high-contrast donate buttons work better than gray buttons.

   3. Simplicity. Flash designs are very often the culprit to a low converting landing page. Simplify the design utilizing static images.

   4. Streamline your forms. Remove unnecessary fields from the personal information form (such as “title” or “suffix”).

   5. Stay focused. Give your landing page visitors only one action to take, not multiple actions.

   6. Avoid distractions. Don’t give your visitors a reason to detour from the page before completing the action you want them to take. In other words, avoid putting full site navigation and links on a landing page that will encourage visitors to abandon the page.

   7. Write donor-friendly content. Generally, when it comes to content, it’s best to keep it short and simple. Use concise language that’s easy to understand and straight to the point.

   8. Show where the money goes. Use charts and diagrams to show donors how their money will be used. donors want their philanthropic investment to have a measurable, significant impact on a cause they care about.

   9. Prominent email capture. Not all visitor will be convinced to donate right away. Ensure you give them easy alternatives to engage with your nonprofit. Then work on the relationship.

  10. Say thank you. By showing appreciation, you invite donors into the “organizational family” and increase their sense of participation. Saying “thank you” will go a long way toward securing the next gift.

. Creating a Google Places page listing helps you rank higher in local search results.

Google emphasizes Places pages in its localized search results, both on computer and mobile browsers. If you don't have a Places page, you're hurting your chances of rising to the top of the first page of search results, which is prime real estate. It only takes a few minutes to set up a Google Places page, so there's really no reason not to do it if your business serves local customers.
2. Add keywords to your business description.

A Google Places page lets you describe your business in up to 200 characters. Make sure you use your most important keywords -- but don't just stuff keywords in. Write a useful, compelling description that will appeal to readers first and to Google second.
3. Have multiple locations? Create a Google Places page for each one.

For each Places page, list each location's local phone number and address, rather than a corporate headquarters address or toll-free phone number. Using a post office box can cause Google to remove your Places page. If your business services many locations but has only one physical address, it's best to simply create one Places page for your actual location and then add the areas you service to your listing.
4. Use standard categories when possible to describe your business.

When building your Google Places page, you can list up to five different categories to describe the products or services you offer. Using standard category descriptions, such as "Internet Marketing Service" rather than custom descriptions, such as "Social Media Marketing," will help your Places page rank better in search results.
5. Don't add a keyword to your Google Places page's business name if it's not actually part of your business's name.

For example, your business is physical therapy but your business name is, say, Joe Schmoe Pain Management. If you list your business name as Joe Schmoe Physical Therapy on your Google Places page, Google might actually push your listing down in relevancy. (Google is smart and always on the look-out for people trying to game the system.)

Since keywords are the terms that people searching to find your web pages, it’s important to maintain appropriate keyword density percentage. In any of your web page, you should target a few keywords instead of just having one. This is where Google determine your page relevancy to a niche.

Having a low keyword density for your targeted keywords will result in low positions and having a high percentage may cause Google to think that you are stuffing keywords. For the best effect, choose 1 ~ 2 strong keyword phrases and target for 2% ratio for keyword to article length. For example, if an article is around 300 words, then it should have 6 keyword phrases.
